Long before the world-wide spread of Indian restaurant hospitality the city of Calcutta had become synonymous with the best of Indian cuisine among British naval officers. Calcutta's famous Park Street restaurants introduced Indian dishes to their menus and from then on, the taste and benefits of spices became a topic of conversation in the officers' mess. Subsequently, Indian dishes appeared on the menus of State Banquets and Clubs. Indian cuisine also became popular with British people living in other parts of India. But, it was in Calcutta that restaurants courageously promoted the cuisine and began the world-wide demand for Indian food.
